New Members Guide and Member Handbook

Welcome to the Artifactory!

Please take a few minutes to read this New Members Guide to orientate yourself with our ways and practices.

Official stuff

  • It is a legal requirement for The Artifactory to maintain a register of members, with full name, email or address, and contact details.
  • If you wish write on this wiki, make sure you get an LDAP user account from our IT infrastucture peoples.

The space is Communal

We are designated as a factory space.

  • Ensure access areas are kept clean, tools are safe
  • Ensure that your clothing is appropriate.

Keep it nice for everyone else:

  • pick up your rubbish,
  • wipe, sweep or vacuum your area after use,
  • put away the stuff you used,
  • vacuums and dustpan & brooms are in abundance.
  • Leave the space cleaner than you found it.
  • You can set up a project that requires a small fixed construction area for a reasonable period of time, but be prepared to move it. Label your construction with your name and contact details, especially if it's dangerous (high voltage, batteries, caustic or acidic chemicals, etc).
  • When you're going to be in the space, let people know! Send a message to the mailing list and turn on the Beacon of Guthrie St.
  • Do not use power wood cutting tools inside, nor spray paints - the dust can affect electronics, furniture, and other member's breathing. Try to avoid use of resins or other volatiles inside as well.

Storage Space

  • You are encouraged to claim and use a locker, and thus put your stuff away.
  • You must provide your own lock.
  • No guarantees are made to the security of your belongings on site.
  • Mark the Locker with your name and phone number.

  • Storage for ongoing projects.
  • Mark the drawer with your name and phone number.
  • If your drawer is left out, it will be put away with gusto, don't leave your drawer out.

  • Really big projects.
  • Must remain within the footprint of a pallet.
  • Mark the pallet with your name and phone number.
  • Your pallet will be moved for events etc, ensure that its properly packed up and secured when you have finished working.
  • If your project is not actively being worked on, you will be asked to clear it or take it home.

Communal Materials

  • There are supplies of common/free wood, metal and plastic in the back left corner of the Machine Room.
  • Junk left of the steel Junk Table near the main door is also fair game.
  • The kitchen has a small quantity of Turps, cleaning products, etc.
  • Otherwise CHECK with another member before you start using supplies. Many supplies belong to individual members.
  • If you find you are using a lot of a communal supply like Turpentine, Gaffer Tape, etc, you should BUY MORE for the Artifactory.
  • Get some communal supply or tool credit - if you notice we need something, buy it, donate it, let our treasurer know.
